La Liga giants Barcelona have reportedly taken the lead and winning the race to sign one of Europe's hottest properties, AFC Ajax's  Frenkie de Jong, according to Metro.

The 21-year-old Netherlands international has rejected offers from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain and decided to go with the Catalan club instead, despite conflicting reports several days ago by the Daily Mail.

De Telegraaf and Catalunya Radio reported that the Ajax playmaker has chosen the La Liga defending champions and will join the club in the summer.

Several reports say that the Dutchman's representatives have informed the Citizens and Les Parisiens that De Jong will sign for Barcelona and the club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu will fly to Amsterdam to complete the signing.

Barca will be paying a fee around €90million (£79million) for the midfield schemer. This will make him the most expensive Dutch footballer in history, surpassing Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk who transferred to the Merseyside club for around £75million around a year ago.

His arrival at Camp Nou will undoubtedly boost Barcelona with even more creativity and solidity in midfield. This could perhaps make Barcelona a team with the most exciting midfield in Europe, but the future of Catalan youth exponents Carles Alena and Riqui Puig will definitely be questioned.
